Modern Design with Jennifer Wagner Schmidt

Roomhints interviewed designer Jennifer Wagner Schmidt of JWS Interiors and learned what inspires her, as well as, her affordable modern design tips to keep a room looking luxurious without sacrificing quality.

1. Briefly tell us a bit about you:

Jennifer: “I’m a D.C. area-based decorator focusing on residential design. My design philosophy is to keep decor chic, timeless, and luxurious. As an entrepreneur and mother of two daughters, I know the importance of designing practical, yet beautiful spaces.”

“I love finding a unique piece at a great price. Nothing beats quality that’s still affordable.”

2. Why did you start a career in interior design?

Jennifer: “After working in high-tech PR for years, it was time for a change. I quit my corporate job and dabbled in design, worked at the DC Design Center, and ultimately started JWS Interiors with a passion for creating beautiful interiors. I’ve never looked back—it’s been a fun ride so far. I didn’t even have a website for a couple years.”

3. Tell us about a time that confirmed why you love being an interior designer?

Jennifer: “An expecting mom asked me to design a nursery within a quick timeframe. We transformed the space within a matter of weeks. She was so happy, and, ultimately, the design became one of our most pinned designs on Pinterest.”

4. Your favorite space to design?

Jennifer: “I love designing family rooms—it’s the hub of the house and usually the largest space.”

5. Your favorite hints (products) that get you excited?

Jennifer: “I love finding a unique piece at a great price. Nothing beats quality that’s still affordable.”

6. One thing you wish everyone knew about interior design?

Jennifer: “It’s not as glamorous as it looks! There are many details, meetings/check-ins with contractors, and administrative duties that many people don’t know about. It can be very tedious at times.”

7. Without fail design hint that you have learned over your career?

Jennifer: “Measure and re-measure. No one wants a piece that doesn’t fit in their space.”

8. How would you define the creative process?
“I like to include high and low pieces. Not every piece has to be expensive. This mix will make the room more interesting.”

Jennifer: “I can only speak for myself—it’s fluid! I draw inspiration from all over—magazines and travel. Ideas can come from a single, simple object, and a design can take off from there.”

9. What are some hints to help to pull the whole room together?

Jennifer: “Start with one item you absolutely love for the room and build around it. Mixing textures are also key—different fabrics and metal finishes help bring a room together. 11. What inspires you?

Jennifer: “I like to travel; also, I love fashion.”
