Roomhints Story:

Roomhints started in 2013, founded by Tiffany Willson, an interior designer based in New York, with a Masters in Interior Architecture from Parsons the NewSchool.

Tiff noticed that customers are very naive shoppers when it comes to buying furniture, cabinets or any products to design their space. “It’s not like buying toothpaste, a product you purchase all the time, and have a very detailed idea of brands you like and what you want. People don’t buy furniture all the time.” Says Tiff.

In addition, the internet has enabled anyone to get their product in front of consumers. In the past 5 years there have been 50% more new brands in the furniture space alone. Therefore, the product landscape is saturated. For example, search for “buy sofa” on Google and more than 750 million search results come up. How can you decide which is the best? Big brands have big budgets to get their products in front of you but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have the best product.

Tiff envisioned a technology platform that could help designers and consumers to find the best products (hints.) With that Tiff and her cofounder built Roomhints 1.0. An iPhone app, where one could upload a photo of their room, and the featured designer would send product ideas that could be directly purchased within the app.

Designers loved being featured on Roomhints app and users loved the opportunity to get product suggestions from a designer.

However, two things were not working, 1. Users did not want to download an app. It was time consuming. The users just wanted to get hints from a designer immediately. 2. Designers were curious about other designer’s product hints. Roomhints needed to be more transparent.

So, the team went back to the drawing board and launched or Roomhints 2.0. A simple site to find product “hints” directly from designers. To understand different designers perspectives on products and to ultimately help you find the best products for your home or office.
