Today, interior designer Shannon Kaye shares her design hints with us at Roomhints.

1. What is the best accessory to complete a room?

Paint color can transform any space. It changes everything!

2. How do you decide on the color scheme for the room?

I choose a paint color that will make everything in the room look its absolute best. I also consider the light in that space and the activities of the room.

3. The secret to styling a mantel?

Fireplace mantels provide an excellent opportunity to display collections. Keep them tidy, arranged beautifully, and dust often! Combine your collection with one bold statement piece such as artwork, a vase or objet d’art. This draws attention to your collection by creating contrast.

Lastly, I’d only hang a mirror over the mantel if it reflects something beautiful, like natural sunlight or beautiful architecture, across the room.

4. Designer pet peeve?

Clutter in a room makes me crazy! Not every wall, surface, shelf needs to be filled. Leave plenty of room for your interior design to breathe and focus attention on the best features.

5. Without fail design hint that you have learned over your career?

Impact fills a space better than a million little ideas. For instance, when I work with a client, I consider every point, using gorgeous fabric and hanging them close to the ceiling instead of getting caught up in different trims for curtains. Another big impact example: A sofa in a bold print in front of a gorgeous wall color. Big gestures are much more effective than fussy details!
